Common questions

Taking photos in Obtura 2.0

How do I take a final photo in Obtura?

Open a natural portrait or Freeze movement guide and tap Take photo in Obtura. Compose in the live view, tap the subject to focus and press the shutter. Preview framing is a separate, temporary composition study; it does not save a final photograph.

How do zoom and brightness work?

The zoom row uses the rear cameras and zoom choices detected on the phone running Obtura, even when your plan is for another model. Tap a zoom choice; open Fine zoom for further adjustment. Digital zoom can reduce detail. Use the sun button for brightness. General settings are separate. If an adjustment cannot finish, follow the recovery message before taking the photo.

How does Improve this shot help?

After reviewing a photograph, choose the issue you noticed. Obtura gives a practical suggestion for your next attempt. It does not automatically assess the image. Save and try again keeps the original while you return to the camera.

Where are my photos saved?

Save keeps the original in Obtura’s photograph library. Save to Photos exports a copy and requests permission to add to Photos. Refusing that permission leaves the private original available in Obtura. Exported copies may sync through your iCloud Photos settings. Deleting a private original in Obtura does not delete a previously exported copy.

What does the highlights warning mean?

Bright areas can exceed the meter’s useful range, especially when the sky fills the view. Aim away from the sky or choose SPOT and meter your subject. This warns about the meter reading; it is not an automatic assessment of a saved photograph.

Can I use Obtura with my iPhone camera?

Yes. In Cameras, add an iPhone and choose Use this iPhone or Plan for another iPhone. Planning supports iPhone 16, 17 and 18 Pro and Pro Max. Recognition never replaces an existing selection automatically. Unknown phones can still use manual planning. Framing choices follow the selected model; changing models starts at Main.

How do I change the look or move between steps?

In a portrait plan, choose Natural photo or Portrait effect. Light and Depth refine your intent without silently switching modes. Swipe left or right through Light, Position, Frame and Check, or tap a tab. Open How? for extra instructions. Portrait effect guides you in Apple Camera; it does not simulate blur inside Obtura.

How do preview, crop and Retake work?

Tap Preview framing, take time to compose in the live view, then capture a reference. Pinch directly on the image to explore a crop and drag to reposition it. Retake returns to the live view. This temporary composition reference is not the final photograph and is not saved with your plan.

Which scenes can I plan?

Choose Portrait, Whole dish sharp, Freeze movement, Show movement, Landscape or group, or Evening atmosphere. Action guidance includes children and pets. Evening advice distinguishes a still scene from a moving person. Portrait troubleshooting helps with a sharp background, a blurred face and Portrait-effect edges.

What happens to my saved plans?

Your saved phone plans retain the selected model, framing, look and instructions in English and French. Older plans keep their original wording. They contain guidance, not photographs; the shot journal for external cameras remains available alongside them.

Why might Obtura ask for an App Store review?

After repeated use, Obtura may ask through Apple’s native review interface when you return from a saved shot to the journal. Continuing to interact or leaving the app cancels a pending request. Requests are limited, and Apple decides whether to display one.

Which cameras are supported?

Any fully manual or semi-manual camera. You describe the body's shutter ladder and each lens's aperture range and click step, and Obtura only ever recommends settings that exist on your gear — if f/1.7 is not on your lens, it will never suggest it.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Metering, settings calculations and coaching run on your iPhone. English model coaching needs a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence; curated coaching is used when unavailable. French uses keyword parsing and the curated library. Once your Pro access has been recognized, it remains usable offline.

Why does the app need the camera?

Because that is the light meter. Obtura reads the scene's luminance through the lens to derive an EV, and renders the previsualisation from the same live frames. Images are processed as they arrive and are not written down; a frame is saved only when you log a shot yourself, and it stays on the device. Refuse the permission and the app says it cannot meter rather than failing quietly.

What does Pro include?

Pro removes the weekly limit on coached intents. The light meter, previsualisation, the shot journal, calibration and your camera profiles are free and unlimited without it; the one metered thing is a coached card that arrives with settings on it, which is capped at three per rolling seven days on the free tier. A scene the solver declines to answer costs nothing. Pro is sold monthly, annually, or as a one-time lifetime unlock, at prices shown in the App Store.

How do I restore purchases?

Open the camera chip at the top of the viewfinder, tap Obtura Pro, then Restore purchases, signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with. There is no receipt to find and no account with us to log into. If the store has no purchase on that Apple Account it tells you so rather than failing quietly, and once Pro is found the row stops being offered.
